The story
David Morrison, a developer who sold flour and feed to the government during the Civil War, and land investor Ruben B. Clark owned the two townhouses built in 1864 at 1013 and 1015 L Street. In 1923 the Women’s Army and Navy League bought the Morrison house as inexpensive lodging for enlisted men, with Grace Coolidge receiving guests at the opening, and from 1930 the joined houses ran as the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’ and Airmen’s Club until 1987. That year the club was restored and converted into the Morrison-Clark Inn with a 42-room addition, and a 2013 expansion above the former Chinese Community Church brought the inn to 114 rooms.
