The story
The rock-faced granite building opposite the Old Patent Office was built in 1891 as the home of the city’s first trust company, the Washington Loan and Trust Company (organized 1889), and was one of Washington’s first skyscrapers, built before the height limit. Riggs Bank acquired the company in 1954. The building reopened as Riggs Washington DC in February 2020, with 181 rooms and suites, and Michelin’s guide to Washington’s Key hotels (updated March 2026) lists it with one Key.
