The story
Carrère & Hastings designed the ten-story hotel, their only commercial building in Washington, with cream sgraffito decoration on a reddish-brown ground; it opened on April 4, 1918. Texas businessman William Lewis Moody Jr. bought it in 1940 and his family’s company owned it until 2006. The hotel closed in November 2007 for renovation and reopened on October 8, 2009 as the 317-room W Washington D.C.; after a 2021 sale the owners dropped the W franchise and restored the historic name. Its roof terrace appears in The Godfather Part II and No Way Out.
