The story

James Walker Tufts founded Pinehurst as a resort village in 1895 and commissioned the Carolina Hotel when the smaller Holly Inn could not keep up with demand. Erected in 1899-1900 and opened January 1, 1901, the four-story frame Colonial Revival hotel originally held 250 guest rooms, including 49 suites with baths, and was described as the largest and most modern hotel in North Carolina. A matching addition around 1918 doubled its size, and its cupola is the village’s best-known landmark.
