The story

Thomas McElroy, from one of the pioneer families of the Springfield area, built the house on 949 acres, with 14-foot ceilings, 12-foot doorways and a cherry spiral staircase. The McElroys kept it for about 50 years and farmed sheep, cattle, tobacco and grain. The inn says it served as a Confederate encampment and as a Union field hospital after the 1862 Battle of Perryville. Today it has seven guest rooms.
